a local student stabbed to death at his college. >> do police have any suspects in custody? good afternoon. i'm don scott. >> i'm jessica kartalija. sgltsz here's what a -- >> here's what people are talking about today. a promising college student is killed on the eastern shore campus. mike schuh is live with the latest on this violent incident. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. the president of the university of maryland eastern shore said it was heart wrenching to have to call the parents of that student and tell them he was stabbed to death on campus. >> just like that, he's gone. >> rhonda boat eng grieves over the death of her boyfriend of 4 years, 21-year-old edmond aaron st. clair murdered this weekend at the university of maryland eastern shore. >> that's all i care about his baby. he created it. do you know what it feels like to have to tell a baby your father is gone because of careless behavior because of this

nonsense. >> it happened around 9:30 saturday night as his cousin and younger brother came to visit him during homecoming weekend. >> he died in my arms. >> isiah saint t. clair said as the three of them drove across campus to get food they encountered a group of three young men in the street. >> i tried to tell them to get out of the middle of the street. they started like talking all this other stuff. my brother when he sees danger about to happen he put himself and made sure we're safe. he went out. >> st. clair was stabbed in the death. >> investigators do not believe this is a random act. >> st. clair recorded music under the name trinny west. his friends say his popularity made him a target for jealousy. his girlfriend said he liked to party but a brilliant mind with

a 3.8 gpa who planned to become a doctor. now his family wants justice as they prepare for a future without him. >> he left his baby girl, who will grow up and know how great his father was. >> reporter: university police said they believe this stemmed from an ongoing dispute. tomorrow morning at 11:15 there will be a campus wide meeting including the president of the university where people can ask questions. back to you. >> thank you . anyone with information is urged to call maryland state police. police announce a change in leadership at the baltimore training facility where a trainee was shot. ron matz is live with the latest. >> reporter: the facility is back open with a new director. earlier today the police commissioner announced that major joseph smith will take over as the new director of the training section. this comes after a trainee was accidentally shot in the head at the

department's facility in ownings mills. he remains in critical condition. six officers were suspended pending an investigation. jessica, back to you. >> thank you. police are resuming class room and physical training at the facility but firearms training remains on hold. a washington county man is facing attempt murder charges. police say 38-year-old jenerette dixon surrounded after a 2 and a half hour stand off. they were called to this hagerstown home on saturday after neighbors saw a woman running from the house with a knife in her chest. she survives and is in the hospital. dixon is charged with attempted murder. olympian oscar pistorius will sit in a jail cell for at least one more day as he awaits a hearing on murder charges. tomorrow reeva steenkemp will be laid to rest. her family is demanding answers. >> lawyers for olympian oscar

pistorius will seek bail for the runner on tuesday. the double amputee has been in jail since thursday charged with murdering his girlfriend, model reeva steenkemp. her mother was quoted asking why my little girl why did he do this. pistorius's father said it was a tragic accident, that his son acted on instinct because he thought a burglar was in the house. investigators have pieced together a different scenario. police believe reeva steenkemp slept next to pistorius in his bed. she was still in her nightgown. she was shot once in the bedroom and tried to hide in the bathroom and three more shots were fired through the door, hitting her. the shooting has unleached tabloid headlines. that bat they found at the crime scene is a key piece of the

investigation. >> they say she used it to try to defend herself. there's reports pistorius used this to hit her at first. >> now his lenltd dare legend -- legend career is on hold. >> pistorius has canceled all future track meets as he fights the murder charges. today the music world is deal being the sudden death of singer mindy mccready. she died yesterday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. she was found on the front porch of her home, the same place her long-time boyfriend committed suicide last month. she rose to fame with her song guys do it all the time. the 37-year-old is survived by two children. the world of sports is also dealing with a loss following the death of la lakers jerry bust. bust died this morning in a hospital where he had been

in today's wjz health watch a new study is giving parents

guy dense on tv. kids who watch tv too much are more likely to exhibit criminal behavior. children should watch no more than 2 hours of quality programming. limiting how much aggressive behavior preschoolers see on tv can improve their conduct. they studied young children who watched the same amount of time, the only difference was the type of programming. the children who watched the better quality programming demonstrated significantly less aggression than the other group. new research finds a possible link between diabetes and an increased risk of a fatal heart attack. they can double the risk of dying after a heart attack but the reasons why are unknown. the cause may be a heart enzyme that becomes over activated.
